About the album

Some melodies are composed. Others simply arrive.

Over the course of five years, these thirteen original niggunim came to me seemingly of their own accord — sometimes unexpectedly, sometimes in moments of quiet reflection, but always without intention. They seemed to find me, taking shape in my mind and heart, each with its own character, emotion, and story to tell.

For years, these niggunim remained largely unheard, waiting for the means to bring them fully to life. With the emergence of remarkable new music production technologies, I was finally able to give expression to the sounds and arrangements I had long imagined, transforming these deeply personal melodies into a collection that could be shared with the world.

The album takes its name, מֵאֵלָיו (Me'eilav), from the Hebrew expression meaning "of its own accord" — a reflection of the spontaneous way these melodies first came into being.

Rooted in the timeless Chassidic tradition of the niggun, in which melody gives voice to feelings that words cannot adequately express, this collection journeys through moments of longing and hope, joy and yearning, love and introspection. Some niggunim are contemplative and tender; others are spirited and uplifting. Each is an invitation to experience something beyond the limitations of language.

These are melodies that found me. It is my hope that, in some small way, they might find their way into your heart as well.

Niggun Tikvah

Hope rarely arrives all at once. Like the redemption of Israel, it comes little by little, like the first light before dawn. It gathers strength as it lifts, then blooms into a joy that grows into full expression. This niggun traces the ebb and flow of that thread of tikvah through our trials and our triumphs.

Track 03 Music video

Niggun BaDerech

A niggun for the road: brisk and driving, full of forward motion and the friendship of fellow travelers. It reminds us that the journey is holy too, and worthy of a skip and a jig along the way.

Track 04 Music video

Niggun BaYa'ar

Chassidim have long gone out to the fields and forests to pour out their hearts alone before their Creator. This niggun carries that hisbodedus. Its melody is spacious and echoing, with a flute that calls like birdsong among the trees, until it fades to a whisper. It is a journey of yearning in the stillness of nature, listening for the song of creation all around.

Track 05 Music video

Niggun Oleh v'Yored

Yaakov saw angels "olim v'yordim," ascending and descending a ladder that reached the heavens. The soul knows this motion too: ratzo v'shov, reaching upward and returning to the world below. Again and again the melody climbs to its heights, then steps gently back to earth. This niggun wrestles with the rises and falls of our spiritual growth.
